Won't my child learn this in school?

Yes, however school teachers have many children to support with reading. Your child is going to be doing their readers at home with you anyway, so if you can provide additional help to them to tackle a tricky word, it means your child is learning in meaningful ways with their main caregiver how to read. The research suggests that if your child is supported at home to have good reading habits and use strategies to read, then they will become a more confident reader.

Will I learn what phonics and sound skills are?

Yes, you will learn the key sound skills to help your child with when they are learning to read . Phonics and sound skills are crucial building blocks for reading. We will discuss decodable readers, the science of reading, sounding out and blending strategies.

How do Speech Pathologists help with reading?

Speech Pathologists are trained specifically in literacy and evidence-based literacy interventions. They often work alongside teachers to ensure schools are implementing the highest quality reading programs. Your child's school very likely has a consulting speech pathologist on their team!

Why are we hosting this workshop?

We have seen so many children who have battles with home reading time, low confidence in their reading ability and it sets them back. We have found that by equipping parents to have the tools right from the start, it means children are able to begin to learn the code of reading. We know you have limited time in your busy weeks to help your child, so when you sit down with them for reading time, we want to help you use the most evidence-based strategies to help your child read. If we can set reading time up to be calm and fun for your child, it will set them up for future academic success.

What other parents have said:

Alice's presenting style is clear and organised. The visuals and video demonstrations Alice used really helped bring the explanations to life and made everything feel more relatable.

The tips Alice gave were practical and easy to implement in real life. I could use them with my child straight away.

I’d highly recommend Alice's presentation to other families. She made the material accessible, engaging, and practical, and I think it would really benefit others

-Parent, Warragul

Danielle's ability to engage the group and make the space safe for us to share struggles with strangers was amazing. The information and theories were presented in an easy to understand way, and we never felt silly or foolish for not knowing it.

We highly recommend working with Danielle if you ever get the chance.

- Stephanie, Parent, Endeavour Hills
